Our Story & Team
Ability Fair Trade Village (AFTV) operates as a social enterprise and is registered in Cambodia as a sole proprietorship with Nareth Chhoy as the Trustee/Director.
The village operates on a co-operative model, wherein, producers set their own prices and consign their handicrafts to the village to be sold. The producers receive 65% of the sale price, with the remaining portion being used to employ staff and pay overhead costs for the village. AFTV only hires persons with disabilities and has become a vital component in the support network serving persons with disabilities in Cambodia. Our Story
In early 2015, Phil Rogers, owner of Genevieve's Restaurant approached Rick Wakeman, a community volunteer, with the idea of creating a community-based project to benefit people with disabilities living in poverty. He generously offered to provide a location as well as financial and moral support. Genevieve's Fair Trade Village (registered as Ability Fair Trade Village) opened for business on November 22, 2015 with 10 individual producing members and two producing organisations that train and employ people with disabilities. Four years later, Phil's initial vision and support has resulted in the development of the village. Many of the original artisans have developed their own sustainable businesses and distribute their products through various avenues. We currently have 9 artisans and their families that benefit from this social enterprise. Additionally, our social enterprise operates Full Belly Farm (FBF), a small wheelchair accessible organic farm in Siem Reap, Cambodia. In March 2020 Genevieve's Fair Trade Village (GFTV) ceased operations due to the economic impact of COVID-19. Looking to the future, when we re-open we will operate under our registered name "Ability Fair Trade Village". AFTV and FBF would not exist today without the initiative and support of Phil Rogers, owner of Genevieve's Restaurant. He is clearly an agent for change in helping the target group identified as most at risk of getting left behind by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
